The responsibilities and mandate of the Education Department are as expected. It advises the States on the provision of Education (including vocational and industrial training), youth organisations, the grant-aided colleges and the Guille-Alles and Priaulx libraries.

The reality in the last few years has been far more complex, with the Department in the centre of controversy over the introduction of loans for university students and the rebuilding of the island’s secondary schools.

Aside from providing statutory education and training in the islands, and providing assistance for students going through education not directly provided by the States, the Department also has responsibility for the Apprenticeship Scheme, the Education Development Centre, the Schools’ Music Service, the Youth Service, the Schools’ Library Service, youth employment and careers advice, the Holiday Play Scheme, support services for children with learning difficulties and lifelong learning.
