Banking

Some of the most highly respected names in international finance have chosen to place their operations in Guernsey alongside independent, boutique providers.

The sector provides products ranging from retail banking and savings through international wealth management to institutional business and specialist lending. Importantly it services the other financial services sectors (trust, insurance, investment funds) on the Island.

Specialised banking is a developing feature of the sector. UK Building Societies and International Banks have been assisted in setting up operations by having their entities administered by an already established bank. While maintaining a managerial presence these banks make use of the experienced staff, premises and IT systems of a managing bank while maintaining their own individual identity.

The local representative body is the Association of Guernsey Banks (AGB).

Banking deposits reach record high

Total deposits held with Guernsey banks at the end of September 2008 increased in Sterling terms by £8.2 billion from the end of June 2008 level of £128.1 billion to reach a new highest figure of £136.3 billion, representing a 6.4% increase over the quarter.

Small business receives banking price promise

NatWest has given the local market place some reassurance with a commitment not to increase overdraft pricing for small businesses, with effect from 1 December 2008. In delivering peace of mind on both borrowing and pricing to this vital sector in the local economy, the Bank has also to provide committed overdrafts to small businesses with pricing guaranteed for 12 months from the day it is agreed or at renewal time.
